ABSTRACT

This project is concerned with the problems and prospects of Housing in rural areas with special attention in Ebenebe village in AWKA- North Local Government Area in Anambra State. The research embraces all those necessities which help to enhance the realization of the social and economic need of a given community such as road, water supply, drainage system, transport and electricity that will make a community or neighborhood reliable environment. The research  methodology used are the population of the study, source of data and the primary and secondary data, method of sample collection, method of data analysis involved personal interview, distribution of questionnaire and data analysis. The data are analyzed based on the questionnaire that is collected from the respondent and also with the aid of tables. The table used in this study is to represent the data collected in the field; the percentage (%) is used to analyze the data. Finally, in chapter five, summary of findings and recommendation were then made in order to improve standard of living of the people in rural areas through the provision of good housing which is seen as essential to person’s physical, physiological, social and economic well-being.

1.0   INTRODUCTION

1.1   BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Decent housing is one of the basic needs of every individual, the family and the community as a whole. It ranks second only to food while decent housing can be regarded as the right of every individual, a great proportion of the population of Nigerian especially in the rural areas live in substandard and poor housing, and in deplorable and unsanitary residential environment.

        Most rural dwellers think that housing is simply a building that provides shelter. They hardly care if such a  house doesn’t  have  the basic qualities a decent housing should have, and that is why I picked this topic to look into housing problems in rural areas situation especially Ebenebe Awka-North Local Government Areas in Anambra State and how they can be improved upon.

Housing for the rural population should not be seen to entail only shelter on residence alone. It should connote in addition, utilities and services such as approach roads; waters supply system, sewages and garbage’s disposal systems, electricity and facilities such as health centers, social and cultural areas for education, recreational, religion etc.

        For the rural dwellers in Ebenebe town, Awka north local government area of Anambra State for instance the houses is a product of activity patterns characterized by a socio-cultural context. The compound is the basic unit of housing designs and its size and internal layout varies depending on the system of home expansion and household formation. Commonly, the compound whether small or big accommodates members of the first generation, second generations and third generation.

        The flexibility in the design of the rural houses thus reflects the rural family structure and social pattern at a given time and also ensures accommodation of future changes.  Here, community facilities such as schools, streams/river, spring, market, public squares, place of worship, garri processing unit, the Igwe’s palace, link the individual to the community. In Ebenebe, houses are built by individuals in accordance with their needs and capabilities such houses are built alongside those of kins and are located on recognized family plots. The houses reflect the peculiar local art, workmanship and building materials. Since these are reflection of the society’s living standard, its quality of life, level of economic well being, signs of inequities, poverty or wealth, or one of the manifestations of a community’s solidarity.

        Development programmers in Nigeria are heavily biased in favor of urban areas to the neglect of rural areas. Relatively, not much has been done towards the improvement of rural housing and community facilities.

        The younger and enterprising groups of the rural populace continued to head to the urban areas, leaving behind

The  old people. It is now a worldwide phenomenon as opportunities for survival are perceived in the cities. However, suffice it to say that these opportunities are fast disappearing.

        Ownership of houses is a symbol of prestige and social status when narrowed down to our traditional society. This vital position not withstanding is one of the critical issues confronting Nigeria among other emerging nations of the world to the provision of adequate housing both in qualitative and quantitative terms. To this end, the projected pattern of population distribution for the year 2000 AD shows that a large number of the population, approximately 60% of Nigeria shall be living in the rural areas. Available static’s shows that about 32 (thirty two0 million new housing units are required to meet the housing needs in the rural areas of Nigeria by the year 2000 AD.
