History of the University of Ilorin

The University of Ilorin is located in the ancient city of Ilorin, approximately 500 miles from Abuja, the Federal Capital. Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, is advantageously placed at the geographic and cultural crossroads of the north and south. The University of Ilorin was one of seven higher education institutions founded by the Federal Military Government’s Decree in August 1975. This action was made to achieve one of the educational objectives of the country’s Third National Development Plan, with the goal of increasing chances for Nigerians seeking to obtain a university degree and generating high-level manpower, which is critical for the fast-expanding economy.

The then-University College of Ilorin was originally affiliated with the University of Ibadan. Dr. T.N. Tamuno, Professor and Head of the History Department at the University of Ibadan, became the College’s first Principal in September 1975. Shortly after becoming Principal of the College, Professor Tamuno was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan. As a result, in December 1975, Professor O.O. Akinkugbe, former Dean of the then-Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ibadan, was named the new Principal.

Professor O.O. Akinkugbe, the then-new Principal, paid multiple visits to the late Colonel Ibrahim Taiwo, the second Military Governor of Kwara State, in connection with the new institution, eventually settling in Ilorin in March 1976. Governor Taiwo’s support for the fledgling institution grew stronger under the third Military Governor of the State, Brigadier George A. Innih, who ceded a piece of the temporary site of the Kwara State College of Technology to the university. Until now, the location has served as the university’s mini-campus.

University of Ilorin Cutoff Mark

The management of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has approved and published a cut-off mark of 180 or higher. If you wish to study at the prestigious university of Ilori, also known as UNILORIN, you must have scored at least 180 in the just concluded JAMB examination; this, however, depends on the degree you are applying for.

University of Ilorin’s cut-off mark of 180 does not apply to disciplines such as law or pharmacy. Candidates must score much higher than the minimum score to be considered for admission. Courses like medicine, law, pharmacy, engineering, among others, have cut-off marks as high as between 220 to 300 scores.

If you must scale through the highly competitive atmosphere in the University of Ilorin, you should be looking at scoring as high as 200 and above in JAMB, then improve on the scores in their screening exercise.

University of Ilorin cutoff mark appears to be one of the most flexible amongst several Nigerian Universities.
