History of Igbinedion University

The University has consistently maintained its commitment to returning tertiary education to the internationally recognised calendar of September to June since the foundation of students’ arrival in Okada on Friday, October 15, 1999. The College of Engineering began its program in the 2002/2003 session, the College of Health Sciences remained a popular area, and the College of Pharmacy and B.Sc. Nursing began in the 2004/2005 session. The University began its academic programs in the 1999/2000 session in five Colleges: Arts and Social Sciences, Business and Management Studies, Health Sciences, Law, and Natural and Applied Sciences.

The management board of the Igbinedion University Teaching Hospital, which was officially established on January 12, 2003, is in charge of running the hospital. Igbinedion University has packaged entrepreneurial and skills acquisition programs as part of its goals to train and develop job providers. This allows students to be sufficiently exposed to be “fit for the world of work.” Additionally, during the 2009–2010 school year, a community service program was implemented. All second-year college students must participate in a practical development program in a selected community and area within and surrounding the university or town as part of the curriculum.

From 111 students in the 1999–2000 session to 5036 in 2012–2013, the student body has steadily grown, and during the same period, the staff has grown from 55 in 1999–2000 to 565, consisting of 290 teaching staff (50 of whom are professors), 153 senior non-teaching staff, and 213 junior and intermediate staff.

The Nigerian Universities Commission and the appropriate professional bodies periodically re-accredit mature academic programs in the fields of medicine, law, the arts and social sciences, business and management studies, natural and applied sciences, and engineering.
