In this article, you will be learning the 7 steps in writing a research paper. As you know, research papers are now sacrosanct for students at all levels in the tertiary institutions globally.
Every school wants to produce excellent students who can compete with others in the labour market and succeed, thereby improving the school’s goodwill. This and more are the reasons for the insistence that students will have to go through the critical research writing process and, in most cases, defend what they have written.
Now, here are the 7 steps that will enable you to write a winning and acceptable research paper at any level of learning in a higher institution.
Step One:
When research assignments are given to you, you have to take some time to painstakingly look at the instructions to understand what it’s about, then you choose your most preferred topic that you will work on. In picking a topic, ensure it is something easy for you and interesting to write about. Do not assign yourself a difficult topic.
Step Two:
Do preliminary research on the topic you have chosen and develop a catchy thesis statement. Several academic websites can help you with the preliminary research. For this purpose, I will recommend Google Scholar as a start. Google Scholar is user-friendly and free to use. So, start from there.
Step Three:
Generate your research paper outline. The outline is like you’re starting to navigate the entire writing process. A good outline will make your work very organised and well-detailed. The outline is the first thing that your professor would see to determine whether you should continue or recast what you have already done. So, make sure to follow your institution’s guidelines in preparing the research paper outline.
Step Four:
Assemble and organise the information you got during your preliminary and final research. Make sure to organise the names of the authors from the materials you consulted. They must all be properly cited in your work and well referenced at the back after completion. You can consult your seniors if you need help at this stage.
Stage Five:
This stage is for the preparation of your first draft paper. I’m sure you should have made notes during your preliminary and final research, so that the information you gathered is what you will now develop to write a draft. The draft paper must be well-coherent, aligned and properly paragraphed.
After drafting, you are advised to give someone to read, preferably your professor or lecturer in charge, before preparing the final copy.
Step Six:
In this step, you will properly cite all the sources you read and thereafter write the references of the same materials that are cited.
Step Seven:
It is expected that at this stage, you have completed your final paper. So, there are three things you will have to do before sending the final copy: one is that your paper has to go through the review process, such as proofreading, editing and checking for grammatical errors.
