Operationalizing the definition of terms is one aspect of research that so many students take for granted. It is presumed that defining relevant terms in research parlance is merely fulfilling a research writing rule which stipulates that relevant terms associated with the research topic that the researcher used often around the body of the research work should explained in layman’s understanding to help the readers with clear and basic understanding of most used terminologies in the study.
Providing a basic definition of terminology in a research paper enables a smooth flow of reading and hastens understanding for the reader.
In the past, simple definitions of relevant terminologies in a research paper could suffice for the supervisor and other readers to get the message the research is passing across, however, today, mere definitions may not be enough to put the researcher on a comfortable level to fetch significant grades. The researcher or student would have to write an operationalized explanation of the terms being defined.
This means that whatever definition is written must connect with the research topic, it should draw its meaning from the subject under study. There must be a correlation and link to the project topic. Where this is not so, there is every likelihood that a project supervisor may reject the presentation and request a fresh write-up on the terminologies of a given topic.
For clarity, I have prepared an easy example of an operationalized definition of terms in research methodology.
Note that aside from the definition of terms, any sentence can be operationalized to bring certain meanings to the words being explained.
Research is operationalized when its contents are defined or explained in such a way that sufficient specialized meanings can be drawn from and measured. A researcher can operationalize a sentence or more when practical indicators which are measurable are presented and explained for the reader to consume and deduce significant meanings from.
The following example is a definition of terms from researching the topic “An Application of Social Media in Advertising to Target Audiences to Market a Particular Product and Service”.
