Your population of the study are the specific people or event which your study intends to collect data from. These are people directly affected by the problem your research is trying to solve.
Your population of the study can easily be identified during your literature review. What you are expected to do here is to mention the group of people who your study is targeted at, how many they are and your sources of information.
e.g., let’s say your topic is on “The Impact of Digital Resources on the Learning Process of Secondary School Students in Lagos (case study of Unity High School)”. Your population would be the students, teachers, librarian and ICT facilitator (if any) in Unity High School. You will also need to include staff of Ministry of Education and staff of Ministry of Information. Then you’ll proceed to mention the number of students, teachers, librarian and so on. These group mentioned are people directly involved in providing digital resources or contribute in the learning process of students of unity high school in Lagos.
In research, you are expected to provide numeric data of the population under study. Below is an example of population of study and the estimated number in the study area:
The population of study in this example is made up of website owners, ICT consultants, bloggers and internet users in Lagos metropolis.
Hence, to write the estimated numbers and the source of information, the following is a guide;
According to MediaHouse (2020), the population of website owners in Lagos is estimated at 1,800, there are 145 ICT consultants in Lagos (ICT Directory, 2017), there are 1,650 verified bloggers in Lagos (Bloggerforum, 2021) and according to Nairametrics (2022), internet users in Lagos is estimated at 17.84million.
