A study area in research is a specific location, neighbourhood, community or city that is of interest to a student or researcher to find a particular problem and recommend ways to solve the problem. The student’s project topic has to focus on the particular problem that has to be solved while the study area or case study is mentioned in the topic.

The researcher is expected to concentrate more on the study area in order to be specific in the entire research. One main reason for choosing a study area is so that the researcher or student will not have to burn his or her time, resources and effort investigating areas that may be impossible to successfully complete the study in good time.

Sometimes students get entangled with a study area that is beyond their scope of work, when this happens, the student may not be able to complete their project or find it difficult to meet deadlines which may discourage their project supervisor from sending in their names as candidates ready for project defense.

When students don’t meet deadlines, they won’t be able to defend with their mates and might end up with a carryover or poor grade.

Choosing a study area in research will do the following for a researcher or student:

1. The student will be able to save time
2. Not much resources will be spent compared to when a broader area is being investigated
3. It improves students’ concentration and interest in the study
4. The study would be detailed and elaborate
5. It will be easier to find and recommend solutions for the study
6. The students won’t get confused about the relevant tools needed to analyze the data obtained from the study area.
7. The students get attracted to the study and enjoy it.
8. The student will get help from the supervisor especially when the supervisor is appropriate for the study area.

When students choose a study area in research, the entire exercise becomes an easy task for the student and the proper analysis for the subject matter is applied effectively.
