In this article, we will learn with examples, the right way to calculate and determine the sample size of a study using Taro Yamane’s formula in research. We will use an illustration of real-time research carried out in recent times.
We will start by showing you sample of how to present population of the study. You will also learn how to organize your estimated population in tables and categorizing the data.
Stage by stage process of calculating and determining what the sample size is using Taro Yamane will show as well. If you have any question or need help determining your sample size, do not hesitate to reach out to us immediately.
See Illustration Below
The population of the study are the network and technical department, metering and revenue department, and the supervisors and management staff of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC). During field survey (2026), EEDC staff at Enugu North Local Government Area are estimated in table 3.1 below:
| EEDC Operational Zones | Management staff | Supervisors | Network and technical | Metering and Revenue | Total | Sample size |
| Ogui District | 4 | 5 | 48 | 28 | 85 | 52 |
| GRA feeder Zone | 3 | 7 | 29 | 22 | 61 | 38 |
| New Haven feeder Zone | 15 | 2 | 23 | 20 | 60 | 37 |
| Independence Layout feeder | 2 | 2 | 20 | 20 | 44 | 27 |
| Total | 24 | 16 | 120 | 90 | 250 | 154 |
Stratified random sampling technique was used to determine the sample population; the sample size was determined by adopting Taro Yamane model.
nh = n x Nh
N
Where:
N = Total population
n = Sample size
Nh = Population of each zone
nh = Sample size per zone
Ogui District:
154 x 85 = 52.36 say 52
250
GRA Feeder Zone:
154 x 61 = 37.58 say 38
250
New Haven (North) Feeder Zone:
154 x 60 = 36.96 say 37
250
Independence Layout (North) Feeder:
154 x 44 = 27.104 say 27
250
So, the above is how to determine the sample size of a study using Taro Yamane’s formula in research.
